Upscayl is a free and open-source AI image upscaler. Its core logic uses advanced AI models (such as Real-ESRGAN) to reconstruct pixels, thereby enlarging low-resolution images by 4x or more without losing (and even improving) image quality.
Unlike many “fake free” or cloud-based tools on the market, Upscayl’s greatest advantage is its local processingIt does not need an internet connection, does not upload your images, and fully utilizes your computer’s GPU to do the work, protecting privacy while being hardcore and efficient.

Built-in multiple models for different scenarios: you can switch models based on your image style.
- Real-ESRGAN: General purpose, suitable for most photos.
- Remacri: Suitable for realistic style photos, enhances contrast.
- Ultramix: Good color balance.
- Ultrasharp: Pursues maximum sharpness.
- Digital Art: Specifically optimized for anime, illustrations, and other 2D art.

Batch Upscale: Supports importing an entire folder of images at once for queued processing, hands-free.
Double Upscayl: If 4x upscale is not enough, enable this to achieve 16x upscale (requires higher hardware specs).
Usage Tutorial
Upscayl’s interface is very simple—essentially “foolproof” operation in three steps:
- Select Image:
- Click the “Select Image” button on the left to upload a single image you want to process;
- or switch to the “Batch Upscale” tab to select a folder containing multiple images.
- Select Model:

Real-ESRGAN, and for anime images, chooseDigital Art. - Tip: If unsure which is best, test different models on a single image.
- Choose a model from the “Select Model” dropdown. Generally, start with the default
- Upscayl (Start Upscaling):
- Set “Set Output Folder” (output path).
- Click the big orange button at the bottom: UPSCAYL.
- Wait a moment (depending on your GPU performance), then a before/after comparison will appear on the right; drag the slider to see the stunning effect.
